Bird's Custard Powder is the brand name for the original powdered, egg-free imitation custard powder. The product is a powder, based on cornflour, which thickens to form a custard-like sauce when mixed with milk and heated. This mainstay of kitchen cupboards across the UK and most African countries, combines convenience with a truly unique flavor.
Preparation and use
Mix 2 tablespoons of custard powder with milk and sugar to a paste. Then add 2 cups of boiling milk, and heat gently to the boil. Bird's Custard Powder, mixed with sugar and milk, produces a creamy, delicious custard that will add an essential touch to all kinds of desserts, including fruit crumbles, bread and butter pudding and Christmas pudding.

History
Bird's Custard was first formulated and first cooked by Alfred Bird in 1837 at his chemist shop in Birmingham. He developed the recipe because his wife was allergic to eggs, the key ingredient used to thicken traditional custard. The Birds continued to serve real custard to dinner guests, until one evening when the egg-free custard was served instead, either by accident or design. The dessert was so well received by the other diners that Alfred Bird put the recipe into wider production.
